A step-by-step art instructions document, 2010 Custom Art Instructions.pdf, was created to help guide you through the artwork process. Following these instructions will
speed the production of your order. This document is available for download where you find the templates on the custom website.
File Formats
For your convenience, the client template is available in three file formats; AI9, CS3 and PDF. Use the AI9 client template if you are using previous versions of Adobe Illustrator or graphics programs other than Adobe Illustrator. If you are using a different graphics program to drop your artwork onto the template, please export a copy of the file as Adobe Illustrator or eps before re-submitting your file to us.
Printable Panels
The first thing you see upon opening the client template is a series of light blue objects which represent the garment’s customizeable panels. Position your artwork over these art panels, paint them a solid color or use them to mask background artwork. Either method is acceptable provided the graphic elements do not overlap the adjacent art panels.
Please refrain from moving or re-sizing these art panels in order to maintain consistency between the print production and on-line 3D model preview.
Layers
Objects in the client template are organized in the Layers palette in order to serve the different stages of the proofing and production processes.
Your artwork goes into the unlocked Artwork layer. The 3D Overlay, the SUGOI Logos, the Art Placement Guides and the Registration Marks layers must all remain locked in order to
prevent the template elements from getting mixed in with your artwork.
The 3D Overlay Layer
The 3D Overlay layer, located at the top of the Layers palette list, is for the purpose of previewing your artwork on the custom website’s online 3D model. The elements in this
layer shows the custom garment’s style detailing such as stitching, zippers, non-sublimated panels, seam binding and seam lines. The 3D Overlay layer specifies ‘No Art in This
Layer’ and is locked in order to preserve its integrity. Please do not add art, move, unlock, edit or delete it.
Art Placement Guides
One set of artwork is used to print a garment’s full XS to 2XL size range. The Art Placement Guides are there to help you position your artwork in each art panel. Fill the art
panel to the edges with background art. Foreground art such as logos and type, which must appear on every size of the garment, should be positioned within the XS Logo Safe
Zones.
Art Placement Around a Zipper
Your artwork may be compromised depending upon the garment’s zipper style. Artwork positioned near or crossing an invisible zipper remains intact while art work positioned near or crossing an exposed zipper will be partially hidden.
Logo Alignment and Orientation
Position a logo inside the XS Logo Safe Zone and align it using the Logo Line and Center Line guides. The Logo Orientation arrow indicates the direction a logo should read.
SUGOI Branding
There are typically two SUGOI logos per garment, one on the front and another on the back, following the SUGOI brand standards guideline. Please do not move or re-size them.
Fonts
Text must be “outlined” or converted to vector art prior to submission. Please do not send fonts or artwork files requiring fonts.
Backwards Compatibility
The SUGOI art team currently uses Illustrator CS3 to process your artwork files. Submitted art files prepared in CS4 will be back-saved to CS3 which may compromise any artwork
created using new features not present in CS3.
Minimum Line Weight
Due to the limitations in the printing process, graphics thinner than 2pts and text smaller than 1/8 inch may be distorted or fail to print altogether. SUGOI artists reserve
the right to modify submitted artwork in order to conform to production requirements.
Use of Black
A sublimated black panel may no necessarily match dyed fabric black such as on a short base. It is preferable to design sublimated panels in a contrasting color.
White Panels
Be mindful of transparency which occurs when white fabric is wet. Avoid designing artwork with large white areas on apparel such as shorts, tri-wear and swimwear.
Red Fades
Red is the only color that fades to an undesirable pink color at it’s lightest printable %.
Fade Drop-Off
Although the digital press can produce a fine fade, it is unable to print down to 0%. The lightest it can print is 10%, which we termed as drop-off.
Artwork Crossing the Back Pocket Opening
Try to keep pertinent logos and graphics within the specified logo safe zones on or above the back pockets, in order to prevent them from being cut or distorted by the pocket openings.
